Who is in the room with you

Gastrointestinal Endoscopist

Dr. Omar Quiroz performs your procedure and goes over the findings with you.

Certified anesthesiologist

Gives and monitors your sedation for the whole procedure.

Registered nurse

Present at every endoscopy and colonoscopy, from start to finish.

Every procedure is done with a certified anesthesiologist, who gives and monitors your sedation the whole time, and a nurse — both are always present alongside Dr. Quiroz.

What is a colonoscopy, and when do you need one?

A flexible HD camera examines the inside of your colon and rectum while you are sedated. If polyps are found, they are removed during the same procedure — no second intervention.

Common reasons to have one

  • Screening from age 45 (earlier with a family history)
  • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool
  • A change in bowel habits lasting more than 4 weeks
  • Iron-deficiency anemia without a clear cause
  • Follow-up after previous polyps

How it works

1

Before

  • Clear-liquid diet the day before
  • Bowel-cleansing solution in two doses, as instructed in your prep PDF
  • Come with an adult companion
2

During

  • Sedation by a certified anesthesiologist — no pain
  • 20–40 minutes
  • Polyps removed in the same session
  • Biopsies if needed
3

After

  • 30–45 minutes in recovery
  • Dr. Quiroz shows you the photos and explains the findings
  • Report the same day
  • Normal activities the next day

Total time: 20–40 min procedure + 30–45 min recovery

Time at the hospital: 3 to 4 hours in total

Does it hurt?

No. You are under sedation given by a certified anesthesiologist and won't feel the procedure. Mild bloating afterwards is common and passes within hours.

Is it safe?

Yes. Serious complications are rare (under 0.1%); bleeding is uncommon and mostly related to removing polyps. It is done at Hospital Amerimed, with the anesthesiologist monitoring your vital signs throughout.

An adult companion is required. After sedation you can't drive for the rest of the day, and someone has to take you home or back to your hotel. You leave with your report the same day, plus a link where you can view it, download it as a PDF, and share the photos and video of your study — for example with your doctor back home.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what patients ask us most.

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?
A clear-liquid diet the day before and a bowel-cleansing solution taken in two doses. You'll receive step-by-step instructions as a PDF when you book. If you have diabetes or take blood thinners, Dr. Quiroz tells you how to adjust them — don't stop them on your own.
Can I have it the same day I arrive?
No — the bowel preparation starts the day before. If you're traveling from outside Mérida, message us first so we can plan the preparation around your trip.
How long will I be at the hospital?
The procedure takes 20–40 minutes; plan for 3 to 4 hours in total, including recovery from sedation and your report.
Can I add an upper endoscopy on the same day?
Yes — one sedation, one recovery. The combined price is from $9,500 MXN (≈ US$510, approximate — billed in MXN).
