Who is in the room with you

Gastrointestinal Endoscopist

Dr. Omar Quiroz performs your procedure and goes over the findings with you.

Certified anesthesiologist

Gives and monitors your sedation for the whole procedure.

Registered nurse

Present at every endoscopy and colonoscopy, from start to finish.

Every procedure is done with a certified anesthesiologist, who gives and monitors your sedation the whole time, and a nurse — both are always present alongside Dr. Quiroz.

What is an endoscopy?

A thin, flexible HD camera passes through your mouth while you are sedated and shows your esophagus, stomach and duodenum in real time. If anything needs a sample, biopsies are taken in the same procedure.

Also called upper endoscopy, gastroscopy, EGD or panendoscopia — it's the same study and the same price.

What it can find

  • Gastritis and H. pylori infection
  • Gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Reflux damage, esophagitis and Barrett's esophagus
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Early signs of stomach cancer

How it works

1

Before

  • 8 hours of complete fasting — no food or drink, not even water
  • Come with an adult companion
  • Don't stop any medication on your own — ask first
2

During

  • Sedation by a certified anesthesiologist — no pain
  • 15–25 minutes
  • HD photos of any findings
  • Biopsies if needed
3

After

  • 30–45 minutes in recovery
  • Report with photos the same day
  • Pathology results in 5 to 10 business days, if biopsies were taken
  • Follow-up questions on WhatsApp

Total time: 15–25 min procedure + 30–45 min recovery

Time at the hospital: 2 to 3 hours in total

Does it hurt?

No. You are sedated by a certified anesthesiologist and won't feel pain. Some patients have a mild sore throat for a few hours afterwards.

Is it safe?

It is one of the safest procedures in digestive medicine; serious complications are rare (under 0.1%). It is done at Hospital Amerimed with continuous monitoring by the anesthesiologist and full hospital backup.

An adult companion is required. After sedation you can't drive for the rest of the day, and someone has to take you home or back to your hotel. You leave with your report the same day, plus a link where you can view it, download it as a PDF, and share the photos and video of your study — for example with your doctor back home.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what patients ask us most.

How do I prepare for an endoscopy?
Eight hours of complete fasting — no food or drink, not even water. If you take blood-pressure medication, take it with a small sip of water. If you have diabetes or take blood thinners, Dr. Quiroz tells you how to adjust them when you book — don't stop them on your own. You'll receive the full instructions as a PDF.
How long will I be at the hospital?
The procedure takes 15–25 minutes; plan for 2 to 3 hours in total, including assessment, recovery from sedation and your report.
Can I drive afterwards?
No. After sedation you can't drive for the rest of the day, so an adult companion is required to take you home or back to your hotel.
Can I add a colonoscopy on the same day?
Yes — one sedation, one recovery. The combined price is from $9,500 MXN (≈ US$510, approximate — billed in MXN).
